Ubuntu 20.04 LTS

Ubuntu 20.04 LTS has been released for the general public on April 23rd, 2020. As always, there is a Desktop edition and several Cloud/Server editions suitable for many different architectures. Microsoft, eat your heart out.
For quite some years, I have prefered to use the Ubuntu distribution of Linux1). This applies to both the Desktop as the Server edition. On nearly all our servers there's a Ubuntu Server LTS2) edition. For security reasons, I choose to be well behind the early adaptors in case of a server operating system. So, before we start using version 20.04 at least 6 months will have passed. In the mean time, we'll install all security updates of the LTS editions which goes without saying.
Ubuntu is based on Debian. One of the more interesting core feature is that the root user is not available by default. Just like Debian, its offspring Ubuntu uses sudo to launch commands with root authorization. The other day, I found a clear description of several advantages of doing so.

Sinds enkele jaren heb ik een voorkeur voor de Ubuntu distributie van Linux3). Dit geldt trouwens zowel voor de Desktop als voor de Server editie. Op bijna al onze servers draait een Ubuntu Server LTS4) editie. Ik kies er uit veiligheidsoverwegingen bij een server operating system bewust voor om achter de early adaptors aan te lopen. Dus voordat wij versie 20.04 gebruiken, zijn we wel minimaal een half jaar verder. Uiteraard installeren wij wel de security updates van de LTS versies.
Ubuntu is op zijn beurt gebaseerd op Debian. Eén van de interessante eigenschappen van Debian is dat de root user niet standaard beschikbaar is. Net als Debian maakt Ubuntu gebruik van sudo om commando's met root-rechten uit te kunnen voeren. Laatst vond ik toevallig een heldere beschrijving van de voordelen ervan.
