Yesterday was a signal

What happened on 4 October 2021 can be considered a signal. Facebook and its other privacy invading platforms, including Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger were down for several hours. Time to leave them all behind.

The outage coincidently or not occurred on the day that a former Facebook employee Frances Haugen came forward. She was the whistleblower who leaked tens of thousands of documents about the company’s algorithms, showing Facebook always chose profit over public good. For more, read this story.

Of all mentioned tools, I only use WhatsApp, simply because many people in my network do. The acquisition by Facebook a few years ago would eventually seriously harm users' privacy was my fear back then.

Time for an alternative to gradually switch over to when there are enough people convinced to leave the privacy invaders behind. As far as I'm concerned, that's Signal. And it is open source software, by the way.

Columnist Marc Hijink from Dutch Newspaper NRC wrote the following:

I myself have been trying to transfer my network step by step to Signal – safe and non-profit. Until recently, this was based on the argument that Facebook does not take your privacy very seriously, and should just not be supported as a company simply for that reason alone. However, most people don't care about that: it works, doesn't it?

But thanks to last Monday's outage, WhatsApp itself gave the best argument to install a backup WhatsApp. Together with your entire sports club, all your colleagues, your whole family: pick up your messages and just leave.

On 24 January 2021, the Guardian recommended the platform too stating that “Signal, a secure messaging app recommended by authorities such as the Electronic Frontier Foundation and Edward Snowden […] is privacy focused and has no desire to analyse, share or profit from users’ private information, says Jake Moore, cybersecurity specialist at ESET”.

Zie hiervoor https://www.consumentenbond.nl/internet-privacy/signal-goed-alternatief-voor-whatsapp.
